PROGRAMS
Volunteer of the Month

Congratulations to Jackie Froemming, Brainerd Main Street's September Volunteer of the Month, a new recognition program to thank our volunteer leaders. Jackie has worked with the University of Minnesota Extension for five years as the County Extension Educator for Crow Wing County.

Why does she volunteer? She volunteers because of she has knowledge to contribute and wants to be part of a group that is promoting positive changs for our city. She got involved with the Brainerd Main Street Program because she felt that she had an opportunity to contribute her research-based knowledge regarding horticulture-related projects within the program.

How is she involved? She is the chair of the Design Committee which works toward creating an inviting atmosphere in the program area through such things as attractive window displays, building improvements, and landscaping. This past spring she was involved with the Laurel Street tree planting and served as chair for the "Brainerd in Bloom" pilot project.

Highlights of being a volunteer She helped build the "Brainerd in Bloom" pilot project, a campaign developed to encourage the beautification of the City of Brainerd through the use of plants. A total of 12 applicantions were received in four categories and judging was held on July 27. The Laurel Street tree planting project surpassed all expectations this past spring. The original goal of eight trees was met and passed when a total of 13 trees were sponsored by community members and organizations. She believes that the Brainerd Main Street Program has brought positive change to the community, such as a nicer downtown area with more trees along Laurel Street!

Greening Up Laurel Street

Trees planted along streets in-town create safer walking environments and more appropriate traffic speeds, according to "22 Benefits of Urban Street Trees," by Dan Burden. That is why Brainerd Main Street Design Committee has the goal to "green up" Laurel Street. The next tree planting will take place in October 2010. This project is being completed with the assistance of Crow Wing County, Landsburg Landscape Nursery, Crow Wing County Master Gardeners, Northland Arboretum, and Brainerd's Park & Recreation.
